Stamp Marked AAA Anniversary

Fifty years ago, the U.S. Post office Department issued an attractive 3ยข commemorative stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the American Automobile Association (Minkus CM349 / Scott 1007). Its design features a student Safety Patrol crossing guard protecting two children, as well as automobiles from 1902 and 1952.

The press run for the AAA stamp totaled 117,415,000 copies - a little above average for the U.S. commemorative postage stamps issued in 1952, but still plenty of stamps to satisfy future generations of stamp collectors who seek a mint example at moderate cost.

Illustrated above is a first-day cover for the AAA stamp. Stamp and cover dealers often sell similar covers for about $1 to $5 each for the more common varieties. That isn't a bad price to pay for souvenirs from half a century ago, which recognize the importance of motoring safety and convenience.
