Swiss Holiday Issue are 'Scent' - SationalFragrance-conscious philatelists may be interested in this year's floral Christmas stamp designs, which will be issued on Nov. 19.
The first of five, a 70c+35c shown at right, depicts the Christmas rose (Helleborus niger) against a gold background. However, it also carries it's own custom scent: a seasonal blend of fresh pine needles, cinnamon, candle wax and cloves. According to Swiss Post, a printing process combines scented micropearls with a special coating and applies the coating to the top of the stamp. Gently rubbing the stamp's surface crushes the mircopearls and releases the fragrance. A companion quartet of semipostal rose stamps, each featuring the same fresh rose perfume, will be released on Nov. 19 as well. Shown below, they picture the Ingrid Berman rose (valued at 70c+35c), Belle Vaudoise (90c+ 45c), Charmian (90c+ 45c) and Fruhlingsgold (130c+65c). All five rose stamps, which were designed by Anne Marie Trechslin, mark the 90th anniversary of Switzerland's pro juventute Foundation, an organization dedicated to social service for children and families.
